Frontier

Art, Game Design

March 2013 - May 2013

This was my first large group project, and was definitely one of the coolest projects I worked on in my five years in game design. JP Morgan Chase turned to RIT in order to make a game that could make the concept of financial literacy easier for people to grasp. Professor David Simkins, myself, and three other students that commonly worked together on educational games (which also ended up being the people I launched a start-up with) spent a whole Sunday brainstorming and coming up with ideas of a fun and engaging way to present the idea of financial literacy.

We came up with three ideas, one of which was Frontier. The five  of us spent a great deal of time on each of the three, and then these ideas were presented to the JP Morgan Chase team in New York City. It was almost too difficult to choose, all of our ideas received great reviews. Once Frontier was chosen, the professors heading the development team started asking around for highly qualified students to work on the game. Another big-team brainstorming session happened, and development on Frontier began.

I moved to the art team. This project worked out well for me because this was the first time I was really seeing what working on a team of this size was like. There were easily twenty or more students and staff at work. This was also my first exerience working with several artists; I'm usually the only one on my team. The experience was invaluable, as we created concepts, did research, and most importantly, had lovely Sunday working brunches. The key skills I took away from this were communication skills, working towards strict deadlines, and I even learned how to use a program I had always wanted to: Adobe Illustrator.

Overall, had the project lasted longer, I could see this becoming a big part of where my future would lie.

My Role:

I was part of the original game design team, and then moved to the art team. I designed and created assets for the unique building architecture in this space-race universe.
